Part Two is similar to part one, but is slightly more complex, with more half-square triangles.
I like to draw my lines with one of two things - Frixion pens or Bohin mechanical pencils. I use either of them where it doesn't matter what you use as long as you're drawing on the wrong side of the fabric and what you use doesn't bleed when wet. Bohin pencils are especially nice for drawing a white line on dark fabric.
They have an assortment of colors of replacement ceramic chalk. I got my original pencil at a quilt show, but I recently got another one on Amazon, so I didn't have to keep swapping out the colors of chalk from light to dark. Of course, they are available at many quilt shops and elsewhere online.
I like to spin my seams in these blocks similar to how Bonnie Hunter does in many of her instructions. As long as you press each of the 4 four-patch seams in the same direction, the final four-patch seams should fit together and the middle one should also be one that can be spun this way.
Remember - you're making 4 identical blocks this month.
Part Two - Original Mystery version
Part Two - Tula Pink version
Part Two - Dark Autumn version
I'm making 3 versions of this quilt, so you can see a variety of colorways, and because I'm a glutton for punishment. 😄
- Original Mystery: this version uses the fabrics I referenced in the instructions.
- Tula Pink: this version uses all Tula Pink fabrics, with the exception of the background fabric. I used a larger number of fabrics and mixed all kinds of colors together.
- Dark Autumn: this version uses a Fall-ish palette, with Moda's Grunge fabric in black as the background fabric - it definitely gives a very different effect.
I will bring these blocks to our next meeting so you can see them in person, since photos often don't quite capture colors accurately. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at lissylaine@yahoo.com. I look forward to seeing everyone's blocks!
